Mongolia - Mongolia
Taimen
are the largest member of the salmonid family. Once common from the pacific to
the Balkans, Taimen habitat has sadly been reduced to a few hidden spots along
the southern taiga. We operate in a very remote, wilderness river system that
is one of the mighty Taimens last truly healthy strongholds and, as we discuss
below our operation exists to protect that stronghold. The river system
provides so many heart pounding opportunities for Taimen in past due to the
stunning amount of available Taimen food. These fantastic numbers of big fat
Lenok Trout are the bread and butter diet for the hungry Taimen and make for
some of the finest dry fly fishing anywhere on the globe.
The
"no shuttle" journeys are unique to Mongolia. On all our trips
anglers explore a different stretch of water and cast to fresh fish every day
while avoiding time consuming shuttles. Each morning, you and your guide load
into the boat and float directly from the camp. In the evening, you drift into
one of our several pre-established stream side camps where the fires are lit,
drinks are served and your bags are waiting. We operate on more than 200
kilometers of river, giving us plenty of water to explore each season.
Our
camps, guides and cooks are the best in the business. Our non-motorized boats
are perfect to drift and wade fish. The beauty, productivity and diversity of
the streams is incredible. The pressure is negligible and we're striving to
keep it that way. Much like an African tented safari, the camps are rustic but
very comfortable. Each campsite along the river is uniquely peaceful, designed
to reflect Mongolian traditions and integrate with the country's natural
surroundings. They are completed with cook tent, hot showers, toilet
facilities, and gers for eating and sleeping. There are no generators or
stereos, only the sounds of the trees and the river, the lights of candles and
stoves, and the sparkling night stars.
The
cooks are veterans, The food is fresh, diverse and very well suited to Western
tastes. The coffee is usually hot, the beer cold and the wine very palatable.
The resident Buryat people are famous for their homemade bread, butter and
blueberry jam. Breakfast and dinner are served inside a central ger completed
with tables chairs and woods stove.
Clients are accommodated in spacious ger (yurts). With their wooden lattice frames and insulating felt walls, sleeping in a cozy Mongolian ger is a great experience. Its much like having a spacious stream side hotel room. Each accommodates two guests and is outfitted with simple table and chairs, wool carpets, two beds, linen, piles of blankets and a wood burning stove. On cool mornings, one of the camp staff will enter at your request and light the stove before sunrise..... a great way to start the day! Hot shower facilities are located in specially designed large tents..... Same with the toilets. Both facilities are quite comfortable and private.
Mongolian culture venerates hospitality and the camp staff are noi exception. They are wonderful hardworking, fun and highly attentive folks. You'll have a great time getting to know them and they will make your visit remarkable.
All angling for Taimen are by law catch and release, fly fishing only using single barbless hooks, However our conservation efforts go way beyond this and include tangible contributions such as designing river wide catch and release regulations, improving community awareness and economic opportunities linked directly to fisheries conservation, offering financial and in kind support to improve wildlife law enforcement and providing tangible sustainable business practice models.
