Lake Murray PNG - Papua New Guinea

Memorable Black Bass & Tours on Lake Murray, PNG

Interested in fishing the largest lake in Papua New Guinea? Lake Murrayis located in the middle Fly District of the Western Province of PNG and covers around 650 square kilometres, but increases up to five times this size in the wet season. It has a highly convoluted shoreline more than 2000klms long with numerous rivers leading into and out of the main lake.

It’s been a source of nourishment for many of the local peoples. Indigenous tribes of around 5000 people own the lake and the surrounding one million hectares of forest.

Along the rivers and around the edges of the lakes, including Lake Murray, are large tracts of grassland and savannah which are periodically inundated when the Strickland and Herbert Rivers flood their banks. These grasslands and swaps are home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including large numbers of fish including the PNG Black Bass. Barramundi and Saratoga can also be caught although not as prevalent as the Bass.

All about the Lake Murray Lodge which is your home while on our fishing tours in PNG

Lake Murray Lodge is nestled amongst the trees on Boboa Island. There are 12 rooms with twin and double beds as well as a veranda overlooking the Lake with views to die for!The main lodge has a wraparound veranda, also with water views on three sides. The lodge contains a dining room, bar, lounge and reception area. In keeping with the eco-friendly philosophy the entire lodge operation is solar powered.

Villages can be visited during your stay where one can experience the unique culture of the Lake Murray area. This part of the Western Province is also home to over 50% of PNG's total bird population and Lake Murray itself is one of the best bird watching areas in the province.

Fishing on these tours includes PNG black bass plus barramundi as a possible bycatch

Lake Murray and the surrounding rivers have so far shown us that there is an untapped amount of the mighty PNG Black Bass.

At this point in time we have not encountered many Barramundi, however what we have caught have nearly all been over a metre!

The more we get to fish the area we are sure we will find more Barramundi. When you see the locals with metre-plus Barra over their shoulders, the future prospects are promising.

Please note that all the fishing in the Lake and surrounding rivers so far has been purely exploratory with GREAT results and is open to different styles of fishing. The fishery will be 100% catch and release with possibly a tagging program to be implemented.
Because the wet season is from around mid-December to the end of March we intend to fish from April through to mid-December and possibly resting the area in June, July and August. Our limited exposure to the fishing so far has resulted in some very big fish (around 50lb) being landed and many more dropped.... some were just too big to handle on 24kg!!

Boats of 5 metres in length have been custom built in Cairns purposely constructed for this unique environment. They fish 3 clients comfortably (with guides) and have 60hp Yamaha 4 stroke motors which get clients to a wide range of fishing spots in a timely manner.

The humidity is very high; hence you may experience some showers. Temperature is also high so sun screen is essential along with your wet weather gear.A tackle list will be supplied to our tours’ confirmed clients.

Please note that there will not be any shops after you leave Australia so make sure you have your personal items before you leave our shores.
Beer and soft drinks will be available at the Lodge but if you require wine or spirits we suggest you buy your allowed limit at duty free before departure.
